Luxury Adventure Cruises, for Half the Price

by  Mollie Pendexter | Feb 23, 2018

To celebrate its 125th birthday, Hurtigruten cruise line is offering up to $1,250 savings on luxury adventure cruises, departing between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019. Destinations include the Americas, Antarctica, and Nordic regions with excursions that include kayaking among icebergs, wildlife encounters, and hikes through some of the world’s most geologically diverse terrain. Fares include domestic flights, most excursions, and transfers; all trips must be booked by March 31.

Greenland and Arctic Canada from $9,640

17 days; departs September 22, 2018

Where you’ll go:

You’ll start in Copenhagen and then make your way to Greenland, where you’ll hit Maniitsoq and explore Nordic ruins and cultural villages like Paamiut. After crossing the North Atlantic, you’ll cruise the Canadian coast of Labrador, encountering the 1,000-year-old Viking Settlement in L’anse Aux Meadows, the UNESCO site of Bonne Bay, and Gros Morne National Park. The trip ends in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Why book it:

Because it’s difficult to get to Greenland on your own, an organized trip like this is a draw on its own. The itinerary provides intimate access to some of the most remote parts of the North Atlantic. If you’re looking for a longer, and adventure-rich cruise, this is the trip for you

How much you’ll save: Compared to similar long-form, Northern Atlantic cruises you’ll save about $800 on this trip. For this length of time and itinerary, the price is worth taking advantage of.

Coastal Gems of North America, Southbound from $4,688

13 days; departs October 8, 2018

Where you’ll go:
Starting in scenic Halifax, Canada, you’ll make your way down to small Maine coastal towns Bar Harbor and Rockland for lobster and whale watching. From there you’ll stop in the quaint town of Newport, Rhode Island, replete with shops, maritime activities, and seafood restaurants. City slickers will love the stops in Boston and New York City. From there, you’ll stop in Charleston, South Carolina, recently named one of the best places to visit in the U.S. There, you’ll admire the architecture and dig into authentic Southern BBQ. The itinerary ends in sunny Miami where you can explore the artsy downtown scene or relax on the beach.

Why book it:
Departing at the end of the busy season, this is the perfect opportunity to see the coast just as summer is ending in iconic eastern cities. Additionally, for destinations like Miami and Charleston, this is just before the heavy hurricane season, giving you the perfect opportunity to get in some southern sun before the winter.

How much you’ll save:
With a savings of about $625 per person — roughly $360 per person per day — and an itinerary that includes several cities as well as downtime, this cruise offers a lot for your money.

The Cruise North, Norway from $977

7 days; departs year-round

Where you’ll go:
You’ll begin in Bergen, Norway — “The Gateway to the Fjords” — where you can walk around the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf district and snap photos of the colorful wharf store-fronts. You’ll pass through Geirangerfjord, famous for its high mountains and waterfalls surrounding the river. Then you’ll head to the medieval towns of Kristiansund and Rorvik, before ending your trip in the arctic regions of Svolvaer and Skjervoy.

Why book it:
The convenience of being able to book year-round lets you choose what type of climate you want to travel in; summer, fall, and winter each offer a unique appeal in these destinations. You also can use this quick seven-day trip as an add-on to other travel. Compared to other cruises from Hurgtigruten, this cruise has the strongest emphasis on food and drink.

How much you’ll save:
You’ll save around $100 per person, which can go toward any of the many extra activities offered. As one of the cheapest cruises offered, we recommend it for those looking to get a taste of the Nordic region in cruise-fashion.

Christmas in Antartica from $8,334

15 days; departs December 20, 2018

Where you’ll go:

Beginning in Buenos Aires, cruisers will spend one night in the city (meal and hotel stay are included in price) before flying to the southernmost point in the world and boarding the MS Midnatsol. From there you’ll cross the Drake Passage and spend a White Christmas in the Antarctic for the next eight days, during which you’ll see penguins and enjoy traditional Norwegian feasts. You’ll visit the famous Half Moon Island and have the rare opportunity to hike the Deception Islands. Afterward, you’ll head back to South America — bird- and whale-watching along the way. Weather permitting, you’ll be able to spend the days on deck taking in the surrounding landscape.

Why book it:

Because it is timed with Christmas, this already lower-price trip makes it a great option if you’re looking for a trip for the whole family. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend the holidays in the Antarctic, at the time of year when it is at its most sublime.

How much you’ll save:

For the time of year and length, you’ll end up saving you upwards of $2,000 dollars on this itinerary. With similar cruises during peak season priced at nearly $12,000, it’s a no brainer for us. Be aware, however: International flights are not included in the price, so be sure to book round-trip airfare to Buenos Aires as early as possible to avoid holiday pricing.
